A former University of Kentucky basketball player is facing some serious allegations. A grand jury recently indicted him on sexual abuse and sodomy charges.
Kentucky authorities claim the 25-year-old basketball player had a relationship with an underage girl from November 2009 to April 2010. The man was a group leader at a church. Authorities allege that is where he met the underage girl.
In the indictment, the 25-year-old former basketball player was charged with six counts of third-degree sodomy and three counts of first-degree sexual abuse. Authorities say the underage girl was 14 and 15 years old at the time of the alleged abuse.
As we’ve stated in previous posts, sex crimes charges are very serious. Mere allegations can tarnish a person’s reputation, even if they are never convicted of the crimes. If convicted, people can face time behind bars. In addition, they may be required to register as a sex offender.
Because these kinds of cases are so serious, they must be handled properly. Working with an experienced criminal defense attorney is often wise. An attorney will investigate the evidence in a case and vigorously defend an individual against the charges. They will do all that they can to minimize any potential consequences.
When sexual abuse allegations are thrown out, the general public is often anxious to punish the accused. However, people must remember that a conviction can only be secured after prosecutors have proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt. People remain innocent of the charges until then.
